TRAVEMÜNDE, GERMANY-(25-7-2003) He is the uncrowned king of the 114th Travemuende Week: Glenn
Ashby from Australia won the international European Championship of the
A-Catamarans in great style. In the German Match Racing Championship the
foreseen favourites moved on to the next round robin, which will be held in
front of the Travemuende breakwater close to the shore on Saturday (July
26).
Without doubt the Australian achiever Glenn Ashby outclassed his competitors
with seven straight firsts, after an eights place as a discard in the first
race. On the last day of the fast single-handed catamarans, no more race was
brought to an end, because of very little and variable winds in the morning.
So the best from Thursday where also the winners in the end. Second place
went to Scott Anderson (Australia). The real European title amongst two
Australians could be given to the Swiss Sascha Wallmer.
Thrilling action was seen in front of the breakwater on the second day of
the German Match Race Championship. The wind was more stable there and a
good sea breeze allowed haunting duels. The loudest joy was heard on board
the only all woman’s crew from Franziska Unkelbach, winning against
Sven-Erik Horsch with only a tiny lead. The former German Champion Carsten
Kemmling marched through to the next round without a loss.
Favourites did win in the other two groups, too. Stefan Meister, who sailed
in the 470 in Sydney for Germany, went on to the next round robin, as did
Philipp Kadelbach and Alexander Hagen. Tied in points Andreas Willim,
Jan-Eike Andresen and Henrik Witzmann are also in the group of nine crews to
continue on Saturday (26 July) to find their German Match racing Champion.
The fight for the Title of the World Champion in the Hobie cat 14 class,
where the Dutch Thorin Zeilmaker took over the lead on Friday, will be
decided on Saturday. Joachim Wegener from Hamburg, Germany had a discard in
race 7 but is ahead of Frank Suchanek from Krefeld, Germany, who scores
third. Following classes will finish on Saturday: Hobie Tiger and 29er (both
Europeans), Hobie FX-One, Sportsboat und Musto Skiff (all Euro Cup) and
Laser, Contender, FD, Korsar, 49er.
